Short Fiction Piece

This short story was written for my Intro to Fiction Writing class. Throughout the quarter, the class was given several writing exercises with different prompts. One of the prompts asked the class to write a “how-to” guide for something unusual, so I wrote a short fictional piece on how to live in a survival camp during a zombie apocalypse. As an avid fan of the horror genre, I was excited to further develop this piece.

Zombies are perhaps one of the most prolific subgenres of horror fiction and many different writers have contributed their own ideas as to what makes the monsters scary. To me, the true horror of a zombie apocalypse stems from the human interaction among the survivors. I wanted to see what, if anything, I could offer to this subgenre that had not been done before. My initial idea was to see what it would be like to have a season of The Walking Dead set in a frozen environment.

Through several rewrites, the piece slowly evolved into a short story that would become the final project for the class. I have earlier drafts that are available upon request for those who are interested in seeing how my thoughts on the piece progressed. I was given various bits of feedback from the entire class and the professor, and this was the end result.
